ATM Gives Out Double the Money

An ATM machine at the Royal Bank of Scotland in Lancashire began giving out twice the requested amount for about a two hour period. ATM users were lining up around the machine as word spread through out the neighborhood of the generous bank offering. The atmosphere that surrounded the machine was full of excitement and disbelief while customers patiently waited to take their turn. It seemed as if it was an event, rather than a random happening. The crowd was even monitoring that users were only swiping one card at a time before they had to go wait at the end of the line.

This happened for about a two hour period and was of course due to a glitch. A spokesperson from the Royal Bank of Scotland did state that “the ATM machine at Chorley branch was dispensing cash incorrectly as a result of a technical glitch.” The bank did not reveal how many customers benefited from their loss, nor how much money was given away for free.

Local authorities claim that if people stood there knowing that the machine was broken and pocketed the extra cash that it is indeed theft, however it is a matter for the bank to figure out if they want to press charges or if they will adjust the customers bank statements to show the correct amount that was taken out.
